The House
We are under a mile from Lee Bay, in between Woolacombe and Ilfracombe (just 3 miles from either) and 13 miles from Barnstaple.
The farmhouse was built about 1650 and has been adapted and updated over the years to provide four self-catering apartments and owners’ accommodation. The house, and indeed the whole of the property has a lovely peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. The large lawned garden provides stunning views over the valley to the sea, whilst a BBQ area and garden games make it a very entertaining place to be.
The original farmhouse is believed to date back to about 1650 and was originally two labourers cottages. The walls are built of stone and in most parts between 2’6” and 3’ thick - keeping the house cool in summer and warm in winter.
The study was originally the old cow shed and the kitchen the dairy with marble slabs on three sides where the farm butter, cheese and yoghurt were made One of the down stairs bedrooms has a large ring solidly fixed in the ceiling - originally this was the scullery and pigs were hung from it!
In the lounge there is a large inglenook fireplace which backs onto another large fireplace which may very well have housed the kitchen range. To the side of the 2nd inglenook is a small door which opens into a fairly large bread oven. There is a ‘w’ shaped hook in the reception area which we can only assume was to hang meat in some form or other - perhaps pheasant, rabbit or hare.
